Our philosophy

1. We work in the best interest of the child.

2. We follow the concept of total pain defined by Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of St Christopher’s hospice in London. Suffering of a dying child encompasses all of a his/hers physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and practical aspects.

3. We direct our efforts towards developing a partnership with the child and family.

4. We never lie to the child or family. If they ask, we always answer in an empathic way. We do not use half-truths nor white lies.

5. We don’t use empty words (e.g. “we are all going to die”, “you don’t have to lose hope”, “you can have another child”, “maybe somebody will discover new drugs”, “be patient please”, etc.)

6. We never use the words “YOU SHOULD”.

7. We respect the wishes of the family even if we don’t agree with them.

8. Manipulating, patronizing, forcing and misleading patients and families are forbidden in this hospice.

9. We value silence and the economy of words as an important therapeutic tool. We respect the pace of the patient and family.

10. We never take unilateral decisions. We look for consensus in the team. We try to be aware of our personal limitations.
